The Diaries of Wilhelmina Brody Moriarty

The University Ball is a mixed success. I danced most of the evening but several bookcases were knocked over in the Library. I helped console the head Librarian and organize groups of assistants into repairing the damage.

Thursday, 9 September
The hunt was interesting I shot at a wolf, well I actually shot one I was only trying to warn them off but he dodged the wrong way and I clipped his shoulder. At that range the slug didn’t have much energy but I am sure it stung him good. If I had known what mischief they had just been up to I would not have hesitated to kill them all and post their heads up as warning to others. Most of the wolves ran off at that point. One decided to charge us I was informed it was a local Baron’s son and killing him would not be advisable. So I held my fire, until he was with in 20 feet of me when Sir C and George both shot him with the latest version of the etheric pulse gun. He rolled to a stop nearly at my feet. I am sure he is not going to feel kindly when he regains control of himself. The king ordered him jailed and the hunt continued. I managed to bring down several birds and a rather impressive stag. I helped the huntsman with the dressing out. This seemed to surprise some of the hunt but I was firm, you have to be willing to finish any job you have taken on no matter how messy. Besides the spirit of the stag deserved as much.

The King’s Reception was a much more relaxed affair than the last couple nights. It started with a ceremony that put me upon the stage with the King and most of this mornings hunting party. In the end I was crowned Jadggraf or Count of the hunt. The title comes with a crown, a necklace, and a dance with the prince. It was all I could do to keep my composure. I had to start the dancing and there were hundreds of people here. Then I saw George he was laughing, oh he wasn’t actually laughing at me but I could see his mirth at my discomfort in his eyes. I became a bit angry at that point and it calmed me down. I had a very nice dance with the Prince we talked about his schooling. Then I was asked to take a turn a lot. I was told that a dance with the Jadggraf was good luck, it seems a lot of young men in Potsdorf wish to improve their fate.
