This enraged the son, who began a repressive search for the perpetrators. Eventually, his mother confessed, fearing that disaster would fall on the land if the old custom wasn't honoured. Swinbold had his mother executed. She cursed him to be forever remembered as the murdered of unprotected women. In addition to being a gifted engineer, he is known to be fluent in many languages including Latin, French, Hindi, Cantonese, and German, as well as being well acquainted with natural science. Hereditary madness runs in the family, having manifested more than once with murderous effects. In the 1850s he became the protege of the notorious crimelord of the East End, who was known as The Old Cobb (a spider). When the Old Cobb died, Moriarty took over the operations and garnered the nickname "The Young Cobb." Captured in 1866 and charged with dozens of crimes, Moriarty committed suicide before he could be brought to trial. His body was stolen from its grave within 24 hours of being buried. His followers claim that his mastery of the black arts is such that he came back from the dead. Skeptics say that suicide was a clever fraud. In 1868 he was believed killed in a warehouse fire after being shot, twice, in the abdomen at close range with a pistol. Again, his followers claim that he came back from the dead. She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed - the ruler of the City of Kor, a hidden civilization on St. Damien Island. She is worshipped as a goddess and has apparently been in power for about 2000 years. Several clues gathered by the League indicate that she may be the Biblical character, Lilith, a mate created for Adam before Eve, but rejected by him, according to Cabalist texts because she wanted to be treated as Adam's equal. Whatever her origins, she is a sorceress of immense power with uncertain motivations.
Master Tandu - A loyal servant of Jerrold Moriarty, Master Tandu was the undisputed leader of the Thuggees of the Hand of Kali. After Moriarty's death, he formed an alliance with Lady Miranda and a mysterious figure known only as The Actuary. The three were the leaders of the faction known as the Cobb Loyalists. His plans were undone, in part, by Lady Miranda's treacherous alliance with two other factions. He was last seen fleeing from his former student, Salmalin, in the burning tunnels under a factory.
