Difficult things

Miss Velika Metzger
(Address)

Dear Miss Metzger,

You departed and returned to your own affairs before I had a chance to speak with you directly. The conventions of social contact on this continent continue to confuse me, I must say. But I simply wanted to offer my thanks and friendship.

Thank you for your magical assistance in our batt governm investigation. I am especially thankful to you in being there at an important turning point in my life. I have a stronger purpose in the study of things magical due to the events at Konigsberg. You have my respect and admiration for your considerable abilities. I’m certain that Sir Cosmo and the rest feel the same, and have said the same.

I’m certain that the others have offered this, as well, and they are far better able to assist than I can as a more common man, but if you need anything of me, do not hesitate to ask. It is perhaps completely against social norms to mention this, but I know that a child will be born. I also know that there are very few options for an unmarried woman in this situation. I do not know what your plans are to this regard, but I can only imagine what your thoughts could be toward one, with the unspeakable news from Brixton. I also know how difficult things are for mother and child alone in this world from my own experiences, as my father passed when I was very young and my mother had to begin life in a new country without him, but with my siblings and I.1

Perhaps I’m rambling. I’m certain that some of the others have offered much the same, and can provide more assistance than I can, but whatever I can do, I will. One thing that my association with this league has taught me, we take care of each other.

Yours truly,
Seamus O’Flaherty

Notes:

1.Michael “Mickey” O’Flaherty (1805-1847) and Aaron O’Flaherty (1841-1847) died on the “Coffin Ship” Odessa, as part of the mass Irish exodus of “Black ‘47”.

Curator’s note: this and other coded entries by Mr. O’Flaherty will be, mercifully, transcribed.

Made our way to Konigsberg. I thought too many in group simply planning to kill ringleader. I insisted on going in first to give a chance to surrender or be killed. Baddie didn’t surrender. Perhaps I’ll just trust their instincts in the future to save time. Doesn’t sit well, though.

Fought big, black man. Didn’t seem any different from any other fight. My focus became automatic and the rest of the world became distant and smaller. Now understand magic was involved. I remember chanting with magic people before fight. Now I feel compelled to start study on “Hurn”. Somehow had the presence of mind to keep both Lt. Wooster and the silent, stabby girl from falling. Wooster gave another reasonable offer of surrender. Why is it so few people realize that they are licked?

Destroyed fortress. Edward then blew it up. Adults are angry at him, because he did it entirely on his own. I think I understand the concern of the governess, but I’m wondering if others aren’t concerned simply because they didn’t get to. From what I’ve seen so far of this group, it seems like a “do as I say, not as I do” situation. I’m not his guardian, though, so my thoughts are moot.
