Not much happening
Sunday 27 June 1875
Nearly had a decent match today, but he ran off. Some business with the
two groups we represent. Other than that not much happening.
Friday 3 July 1875
We are traveling by elephants. I have made my way amongst the handlers
to see how they are treated. It takes a great deal to convince a wild
creature to do something other than its instincts, frequently by force.
When in I was in the circus, you would live around these noble
creatures. Barely a complaint about being moved anywhere and
everywhere, did the heavy work when it was needed. Then I remember one
day Little Darla got one prod too many or maybe too hard, and let Red
her handler know she did not approve, and thought she’d wander out to
the water trough and cool her body and temper a moment. Hardly a
tantrum, would barely qualify as a disagreement in human terms. But
this was a big, frightening, enraged creature, putting a scare into
some small men.
The worst thing Old Man Rigby could have done, after me having seen
them put her down, would have been to make me help saw u dispose of her
body. And so, he did.
Bugger it, I don’t know why I had to write that. Tomorrow is the 4th, I
hope to get a moment away and celebrate the 99th day of Independence of
my home country from the bloody B I shall slip away and have a drink or
three, sing a song, and detonate a few nice small things I’ve put aside
for the occasion. I’m not certain any of my friends might share
my enthusiasm for the celebratory event. I wonder what Wilson is doing
right now.
