Excerpts from the diary of

Mrs. Ruth Frazer

Letter to Mrs Morton Sinclair, Bridgwater

1 April 1871
Edenfield Court

Dearest Mother...

I have the most wonderful news.

Mr Frazer and I are expecting a baby.
If all goes well, you will have a new grandchild sometime in August.

I have been in good health and spirits, and Mr Frazer looks after me in his usual assiduous fashion.

We have only just announced our good fortune to most of our friends here. Mrs Cuthbert has known about it since I learned of it, and she has been a great source of knowledge and of reassurance. She is very pleased with the prospect of having a baby in the house. I am in hopes of continuing my work with my pupils (in perhaps a reduced fashion) even after the arrival of our child. Lady Cowperthwaite has indicated that she does not object to me continuing in this way if I am able. I recall that you continued to manage the house quite ably with me at your side (or perhaps I should say under your feet) when I was very small, and you instructed all three of us your daughters together until we were old enough to attend at day school.

We are visiting Edenfield Court, Sir Cosmo's home, for the Easter holidays, and then Mr Frazer and I will be returning to Town.

Please pass my news along to my sisters, along with my love.

Your Loving Daughter,

Ruth
