Excerpts from
the diary of Mrs Emily Wooster (Emily Bertilde that was)
There's snow! In London! Everyone is talking about
it. There hasn't been December snow in London for years and
years. It would be pretty except that it's all gray before it
lands.
--
Mr. Ramsey got attacked at the Library. Wilamina asked if we
could go talk to him, but he'd already left on a trip to Wales by this
point.
--
We headed off to Edenfield today. I'm glad that the snow is still
very light there. The snow is much prettier out in the
country. I've decided that I want to spend my confinement close
to Mrs. Cuthbert and not at Henry's house. We promised his mother
that we'd make a long visit for the christening. On the train we
met the Brent twins. Or rather, one of the Brent twins showed up
and chatted with Wilamina until the other Brent twin showed up and they
started arguing about why the other was there. It was quite funny!
--
It started snowing again.
Mr. Atlas showed up with Mr. Frazer. His first stop was to visit
Wilamina and ask what she was up to. It was all very confusing,
but it turns out he'd had a telegram from that earwig lady.
Wilamina mentioned something about a new mining cart and we were
suddenly trudging out to the workshop through the thunder, lightening,
and freezing rain. Miserable and cold. Once we got there,
Wilamina wanted to work. Atlas helped her and I sat by the forge
and watched. Bay was kind enough to find me a cup of hot
cocoa. I do like his hot chocolate.
On the way back from the workshop, we passed by Mrs. Samaline's
cottage. We heard a creepy voice call out 'ware the witch that
died undead.' I thought about knocking on the door to find
out what was going on, but they had the 'we're doing magic, do not
disturb' sign up. I clutched my note and walked away.
Unfortunately, I got a bit chilled while being out and ended up staying
the night at Edenfield instead of heading back to the Cottage. I
was quite glad not to need to go out into the storm again.
It turned out to be a good idea to stay because there was an inch of
ice on top of the snow this morning. It didn't stop Wilamina from
going out the shop. George was kind enough to help me out to the
shop.
Salmaline brought Lady C over to ask if Wilamina was a virgin. I
started sputtering. I would have said she was being
innapropriate, except, well, it's Lady C and, technically, my
boss. She also asked George. And me. There was
something about possible sacrafice. I do not fit into that
category any more.
It started snowing again. There are now several inches on top of
the ice layer. The children have had a lot of fun playing out in
the snow.
As the snow storm continued, I asked Mr. Cain if he could bring some of
my clothing and affects (and weapons) over.
--
I'm glad I stayed. We woke up to 2 feet of snow! Wilamina
went out to the shop again. She has been kind enough to clear the
paths and George has been ever so helpful. I cannot wait for this
whole pregnant akward thing to finally be over. Many of the rest
of the party has headed over to the train station to meet some
passengers.
While we were out in the workshop, we heard Lt. Frazer say something
about bodies at the train station. We were suddenly on the way to
the station with the Frazers.
When Wilamina heard that there were frozen but alive people on the
train, she handed me a box of the sunshine candy and brought another
one. We took them to the train and she told me to start stuffing
them in the people's mouths. As I was working up one aisle, the
person I was working suddenly started singing. Something more
about the wich that died undead and, and, and... Oh bother, I can't
remember what they were singing now. I remembered well enough to
make sure Mrs. Samaline got the message but... It was
creepy. It was even creepier when the person Wilamina was working
on sang the song again but a little different. And then 4 people
all started singing at the same time. Aieee!
We finally got the folk unfrozen, but 18 of them are in comas. We
ended up sending for Sir Cosmo's train engine and taking the car back
to Edenfield. When we got close to the house, we suddenly heard
gunshots. Mrs. Samaline ordered Atlas to jump of the train and
head toward the house. She followed. I had to wait until
the train arrived at the house (not running well, and especially in the
snow). Unfortunately I also missed out on the fight.
Although I'm not sure how much help I would have been since it was
against dementors. These dementors are almost as bad as those
awful angels. They were the ones that caused the people in the
car to freeze. The dementors, not the angels.
Later---
Wilamina and I were hanging out with Lady C. Galen came in and
asked why all the people were circling. We looked out windows and
saw dementors circling the house. Then we heard Henry singing off
somewhere else.
I'm so grateful Henry's ok. If he'd left me alone with Them, he'd
be in soooooooo much trouble! He went off somewhere by himself,
and ended up getting attacked by a dementor. That had gotten
inside.
Then we paired off and went to search the house to figure out how the
thing got past the wards the Mrs. Samaline set up. Wilamina and I
were heading down a hall when we noticed firelight spilling out the
library door. A lot of firelight. We came aorund the corner
and there was a huge man (Atlas sized but bald and with giant flabby
skin on it's jaws) with a flaming book. I threw a knife at him
and he made my note catch fire. The fight went fairly quickly and
we were (happily) victorious. But several books were destroyed
and it exploded ink. Such a mess.
Everyone had gathered in the library, but Wilamina pulled me off while
they were talking and we continued our research. Then someone
yelled to go to the infirmiry. We were already heading that
way. By the time we got to the infirmiry, Atlas had a woman ghost
up against the wall with his sword, and another ghost was holding a 3rd
ghost in a magic spell. There were also a whole lot of unconcious
people and the smell of chloroform. Wooster was also
unconcious. I hope he's ok! Mrs. Cuthbert laid the 2nd and
3rd ghosts to rest. One went up and one went down.
Sigh. After some questions, the lady ghost was also laid to rest.
There was a lot of other talking and stuff, but I was more worried
about Himself than listening to what happened. He eventually woke
up and told his story. My Hero!
