Something is
Direly Wrong with Wilamina. First she wanted to apologize to
Himself because she was wrong, and then she wanted me to read vapid
poetry to her. She also said that chemistry and glassblowing were
not proper pursuits for a lady. Mrs. Cuthbert said that it was
because she was sick. I made sure Mrs. Frazer knew when she came
to take over the watch. I also told Sir Cosmo that Something.
Was. Not. Right. With Wilamina.
Then Mr. Atlas started setting off fireworks to celebrate something to
do with his country's independence. I didn't know that Ireland
had an independence day.
Monday
We made it to the town with the temple. He is in SO much
trouble. We got off the elephants and He pointed out this woman
that he recognized. He started going on about her performances
when I realized it was One of Those Females who actively worked on
recruiting girls into That Trade. I don't know what was
worse. Him telling me enough that I knew He had been to see Her
and more than once, or the fact that She was Here and He wanted to go
over and greet Her. Wanted me to go with Him to greet Her.
How could He Do that to Me?
We were watching Wilamina when Mrs. Cuthbert woke up and said we needed
to go save Atlas. I offered to watch her while Mrs. Frazer and
Mrs. Cuthbert and others went to go find him.
Sir Cosmo came back looking for everyone. I gave him as much
information as I could and he left again. Shortly after that I heard
Robert saying something about Wooster buying knives for the dancer
lady. I was SO angry! Not only was He paying attention to
Her, but He was Buying Things for Her. And not just Things.
Knives! That's even worse than Vinyards! And He said that
He was just buying them for me. But He didn't have anything in
hand.
But He seems to have been telling the truth there. Not too much
later, a delivery boy did come bearing the most wonderful selection of
knives. And a matched pair of rapiers. And a sword almost
as tall as I am. And flowers. And tea. I'm at least
willing to think about forgiving him now.
Tuesday
Well, the source of trouble has moved off. The whole party seems
to have vanished. She will no longer be trying to attach Herself
to Him. Or worse things. With any luck we will not ever see
them again. Unfortunately, that kind of luck doesn't seem to be
ours
August
Finally home. It was a long journey and I'm ever so glad to be
home. Even if home is the “cottage” that isn't a cottage so much
as a mini mansion.
Among the correspondence was a letter from Henry's mother. She
wants us to come Visit! A long visit. To a
Vicountess! A Vicountess “Dear Emily”d me! At least if we
go I'll have something to talk about because we did visit Henry's
Godfather (Lord Bickersteth) like she mentioned we should. Henry
is not being very helpful in deciding whether or not we should go and
when. I can probably delay answering for a few days, but ought to
answer sooner than later.
Henry apparently had a letter from someone advising him to build a pike
trench near the archery range. Something to do about
the next generation of underwater messages. Imagine shooting pike
out of a tube.
Not having any help from Henry, I went over to Edenfield to ask advice
of Victoria. She said I could probably cut the trip short on
account of us leaving for Carpania for a royal wedding.
What?!?!? On the one hand, I'm glad for the excuse to not have to
visit for a month, but this is going to mean another trip to the
dressmakers. And for exepensive dresses since this is to be a
royal wedding. But when I got home from visiting with Victoria, I
found that a telegram had come in from Sir Cosmo telling us about the
wedding and that a line of credit has been forwarded to the
dressmaker. So better than it could be.
I'll still have to spend a week or 10 days with Henry's mother. I
like the idea of working up to the month long visit.
