Excerpts from the diary of Miss Emily Bertilde

February 9

I just had an exciting discussion with Sir Cosmo and Willamina! It seems that Lady Copperthwait, wonderful person that she is, wants to annonymously donate gifts and things to the deserving in the old neighborhood instead of spending lots of money on us. I think it’s a grand idea, although part of me wonders of some of those deserving wouldn’t rather have a good meal rather than floofy things. But, since I’m not paying the piper, I don’t get to call the tune. And this is a very expensive piper... Or, rather, it could easily become one... Graves is to help with ordering things, and I hear that they are going to try and enlist some of the others to help pay for things. I hope Wilamina can help with the delivery since things are supposed to be anonymous and she’s the most anonymous person I know. Also, many of the people down there either know me or know of me, and many of them recognize me... And I don’t know that I’m very good at bluffing...

Silly Henry walked in while we were talking and seems keen on the idea. But He keeps going on about cannon balls and paper balls and such. Impractical but lovable...

I’m rather excited by all this. There are so many people there who deserve so much better!

February 22

Looney, er, I should probably start using the name that everyone else calls him. Barmy, Looney, what is the difference I should like to know... But I accidentally called him Looney while in His hearing and was corrected. oh well.

Anyway, Loo Barmy stopped by today. He had the funniest clothing on. Is that really how they think ‘civilians’ dress? Along with the dark glasses and fake beard it really was a funny picture.... It was all I could do not to laugh while he was here. And he doesn’t deserve it, really. He’s quite a nice young man.

He did a nice job catching us up on the news of the city. Well, nice job provided that you want to know about the other bombards men and the shooting things going on in the city. But it was a nice afternoon after all. And he made some sort of comment about seeing us soon. I wonder what’s up?

February 23

One of His old shipmates visited today. I was introduced and listened for a while, but I then left them to have a nice, long chat. He seemed to enjoy it, so it must be all right.

It seems that people are starting to know where we are now. I wonder when Mrs. Gregson will show up and yell at us all?

February 27
And now we learn why Captain Winship came to visit the other day. It seems that he is involved in the Liverpoole branch of the Bombards club. They want to have a wedding banquet for us! I guess if they can’t have the party before, they’ll have the party afterwards. I guess they were very much saddened to find out that we had been married without the appropriate party. But things were so very rushed...

In any case, it seems that I am the only female honorary member in the area and they are bound and determined to have a seperate banquet for each of us! I’m sure I would be fine with a combined one. I was trying very hard to put my foot down on several of their plans when Mrs. Cuthbert joined us in the negotiations. I’m still not completely satisfied, but I think things (hopefully) won’t be too bad...

March 8

Stuart told tales today of a great many oddly dressed men with dark glasses and fake beards on the train. Do they really think that they are less conspicuous dressed that way? I would think that they would be noticed more, not less. But it’s not up to me, is it?

March 9

Well, that went better than I expected. There was not nearly as much drinking and carousing as I expected to see from the other Bombards. And Barmy was very charming. Mrs. Cuthbert and Sir Spencer joined me for the banquet tonight. It was disquieting to be the center of so much attention. It was a fine meal, though, and one I didn’t even need to pay for! And they were kind enough to provide other beverages than strong spirits. For which I was very grateful. I think the party got a bit more wild after I left, though, as there were reports of explosions...

March 10

Well, I hear that Henry’s dinner was a bit more animated affair than mine was. He and Sir Spencer were certainly out later.

March 11

And, yet again, we see why people with cannons really shouldn’t get drunk. Did it really seem like a good idea to shoot cannons at church bells? And who’s going to pay for them, I want to know! And I heard that Barmy and one of the others were thrown into jail! How humiliating! I feel very bad for them, although not so bad since it was their decision to get drunk.

March 12

Henry was trying to be helpful again. At least Barmy’s soliciter wouldn’t let Henry testify for Barmy. I’m sure that Barmy would be sentenced to be in jail forever... I mean I’m sure Henry would have thought He was helping, but it always turns out poorly unless Caine has worked everything out. But at least those 2 young men will be paying for the bells and not my dear Henry.

March 14

I recieved a letter today from a Hon Delores Farthingale Fotheringay. (who makes up these names!). She will be traveling through and would like to call on us. When I asked Henry if He knew her, I got quite the earful. And all of it so casually. Miss Fotheringay is the daughter of a Vicount! eep! And she’s the sister of one of Henry’s friends (spongie) and is apparently engaged to Barmy... I hope she’s not too upset at Barmy for being jailed and fined and all that. And I hope she doesn’t take anything out on Henry.

I’m being called on by the daughter of a Vicount! I should go find out what all I need to do to prepare! I know she is here because of ties to Henry, but... Me! Being called on by the daughter of a Vicount! I hope everything goes smoothly!
