Excerpts from the diary of Miss Emily Bertilde

saturday.
sleep felt good. i’m tired and sore and want nothing more than to keep sleeping. too bad something will surely come up...

that something was mr. samaline. i still don’t know how he did it, but i found myself telling him many of the things that are bothering me. i didn’t mention Him. i just couldn’t. i’m pretending that if i don’t even think about Him, the whole thing will go away. anyway, mr samaline didn’t give me the everything is going to be ok or the buck up speech. he did keep going on about catching things as they come. i didn’t understand half of what he said. but he said he was going to teach me something called centering. moving slow to move fast. when i said i didn’t get it, he said he didn’t understand it for several months either. the exercises involved balancing and moving really slowly and him talking to me about things i didn’t understand. mr atlas came and joined us. i was scolded for stopping my balancing when he showed up. this centering business is hard work. I’m not sure how it can be so hard. i mean you aren’t really doing much of anything. but it did keep me from thinking about how tired i was and i did feel better afterward...

mr o flaherty fought again tonight. we all went. i didn’t want to, but edward went so i had to. mr o flayerty won and there were no other fights. good. we got to go to bed at a reasonable hour.

sunday
i was thwarted again in my qwest for a lie in. mrs samaline wanted to go to church but no one else was going. edward volunteered and i was requested. sigh. it wasn’t too bad though. i just pretended to pay attention and practiced my smiling and nodding during the coffee hour. i had another healing from mrs cuthbert and i feel almost normal again. except that healing makes my head itch and makes me want to go to sleep. i tried to do some more of samaline’s exercises, but i don’t think i did them right. i’m not sure how, but it didn’t feel the same.

i wish the day could have ended right then. not only did i have to deal with fire and water and ninjas and bombs, i ruined another dress...

anrhee came running up saying that someone was in graves end. the party split up. edward stayed here so i didn’t have to go. before we could have a quiet evening, lady folks showed up and we had to go to the ship yard to make drawings of the swan boat.

just as we got there, we found a dead guard by the admirals boat. waily waily! it wasn’t just edward to guard. mrs frazer, mrs sinclare, violet, and both the babies were also there! so many people to guard, so little time! mrs frazer had mrs sinclare, violet, and the babies go to another part of the ship yard while edward and i snuck onto the boat. i tried to do mr. samaline’s breathing exercises before we started, however, it all went out the window when the sword came out of the shadows! i’m happy i didn’t drop my sword. edward and owen jumped on the ninja and i joined in. at the end of the scuffle, the ninja was down.

edward climbed up through a hole in the wall and mrs frazer and i went to the main door. at mrs frazer’s signal, i opened the door and thrust in. i guess i was just supposed to open the door. i didn’t understand the hand signals... mrs frazer ran in and started shooting and i followed her. then a bright flash of light blinded mrs frazer so i attacked the ninja running toward her. but he blew fire at me. then threw kerosene at me. fire. flames. fear! i ran. i’m afraid i was screaming again. then a crazy old man that i have never seen yelled at me to drop and roll. it startled me enough that i followed his direction. then the water hit me and i thought i was going to drown for sure! i managed to stand up and look around. edward was running toward a ninja on top of the submersible. i ran to join them and climbed up. poor edward was backhanded pretty hard before i was able to make short work of the ninja. after catching my breath, i realized that there was water everywhere. it looked deep enough around the boat that i was going to have to swim. more wailing and nashing of teeth!

but wait. there’s more. some guy and either mrs cuthbert’s double ran into the building and edward started yelling about bombs. inside the submersible i was standing on. fire or water. which is worse? maybe being electrocuted while in the water. that would be fire and water at the same time!

edward, the new guy, and mrs frazer climbed into a door on the side of the boat i didn’t think i could make it so i stayed on top. then i saw something really wierd. mrs cuthbert’s double (i think her name is madam deveer or something) levitated. she floated across the water, made the bomb boat lid open, and dropped in. i was going to climb down but mrs frazer said to stay up top.

after a few minutes, edward came flying out and started swimming across the water. i followed him. luckily, i only had to swim for a little before i could stand up and slosh out the door. bother. now edward and possibly mrs frazer will know that i have been taking secret swimming lessons. ugh. running around in soggy, sloshy shoes and clothing is so not fun. the water in there was way colder than the pool at otto’s. maybe that’s why i got cold every time i stopped moving. anyway, i chased edward and finally caught up with him. just in time to hear Him on the other side of a wall asking after us... distraction city
